With Purpose and Meaning
The passions that inform my work as a psychologist extend beyond the session. It is also reflected in my efforts as a published children's author, avid surfer, steward of the Great Lakes and an advocate for social and economic justice. A cursory review reveals not only what motivates these efforts, but more importantly embody the balance that we each need to find purpose and meaning in our lives.
As Vice Chairperson of the Surfrider Foundation Milwaukee Chapter I've worked with others to promote environmental stewardship of the Great Lakes through education, community projects, surf excursions and Surf @Water, an annual film festival and beach event for families aimed at water safety, surfing and advocacy of environmental awareness.
Published Author and Columnist
Whether through the children's book, No Bad News or a host of columns and articles, these efforts highlight messages of resilience, perseverance, justice and dignity. Other works include Friends and Neighbors and other contributions that encourage introspection and awareness as a means of healing wounds of divisiveness and inequality.
In addition, essays and columns have included the importance of civility in the workplace, issues of inclusion and diversity and stigma reduction in behavioral health.
Advocate and Organizer
Whether a walk in support of the Muslim community or an evening of inspirational stories from those in the LGBT, immigrant and African-American community, I've worked with other passionate individuals to bring diverse communities together to inspire each other to remain keenly focused on the importance of respect, unity and inclusion.
Lectures and Presentations
When afforded the opportunity, I've spoken and presented on a range of issues including racial justice, countering stigma in mental health as well as fatherhood initiatives. This includes a lecture on countering stigma in mental health for the Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, to co-facilitating a community town forum with mental health professionals and national advocates on the psychological impact that issues violence, disenfranchisement, and serving as keynote speaker for the State of Minnesota's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.
